Tom Holland approached director Destin Daniel Cretton and told him something simple: “I’m going to try a different line”. In front of Aunt May’s grave, he delivered a line that wasn’t in the script: “You’ll be glad to know that I’ve decided I’m not going to do this alone anymore”. Cretton later said that, in that moment, the entire crew understood they had just found the heart of the movie—and they rewrote the story backward, starting from that line.
