Michael B. Jordan wrote a phrase, posted it on social media, and unintentionally struck a collective nerve.

“Not all men who are kind to you are flirting with you. Some mothers raised their sons to be gentlemen”, said the actor. The idea is simple but uncomfortable: we have become so accustomed to looking for ulterior motives that we forget someone can be kind without expecting anything in return. A compliment, a smile, letting someone go first, listening attentively. None of that has to conceal romantic interest.

The phrase has been circulating since 2021 and continues to resurface year after year, shared even by figures like Shaquille O’Neal. Perhaps because it reminds everyone of a lesson that some mother, somewhere, set out to teach: treating another person well should not be grounds for suspicion, but simply the right way to be in the world.
