Trump did it again. On Sunday afternoon, he posted a photo of the Moon on Truth Social with a phrase that left no room for doubt: “The Moon is ours”.
The post quickly exploded: thousands of “likes” and more than a thousand reposts in just a few hours. That same day, as if he wanted to reinforce the idea, he shared another image: the proposed new uniform for the United States Space Force. All of this comes just days after he announced a commission to create the United States Space Academy, intended to train future NASA professionals.
There is a problem with Trump’s statement: the UN Outer Space Treaty, which has been in force for decades, expressly prohibits any country from claiming sovereignty over the Moon. Not by declaration, use, or occupation. So while the post was racking up likes, it was also raising questions about how seriously this latest presidential whim should be taken.
