A clinical trial led by the University of Nottingham restored the ability to taste food to a medical researcher who was affected after contracting Covid in August 2022.

The patient, 44-year-old Paul Wicks, took part in a 12-week pilot program designed by Dr. Nicole Yang, in which he had to chew a specially formulated gum with extremely intense flavors in search of stimulation in his taste buds and nerve endings.

The treatment, carried out in Wicks’s own home, combined sweet, sour, and spicy stimuli to repair brain connections, enabling the participant to once again perceive the aroma of coffee beans and his favorite meals.
