Julie Martin never thought a family meal would end like this.
Her niece, Amy May Shead, is allergic to peanuts. Something the restaurant where they ate knew or should have known. But the dish arrived at the table anyway, with the ingredient her body cannot tolerate, and what followed was a reaction that no protocol should ever allow to happen.
Today, Martin says, Amy May cannot walk, speak, or see. A lapse in a kitchen turned an ordinary outing into a medical emergency that robbed a young woman of basic abilities as she simply wanted to eat out with her family.
