Nurse says the “gym penis” is real &#x1fae5 ; why it happens and when to consult a professional

You leave the gym, look in the locker room mirror, and your arms look huge. What doesn’t look quite as big is another part of your body.

It’s called ‘gym penis’ and, according to Chris Bustamante, aesthetic nurse practitioner and founder of Lushful Aesthetics, it’s a real phenomenon. During exercise, blood is redirected to the muscles, heart, lungs, and skin, which can cause temporary retraction. Some men barely notice it; others feel like everything is retreating into the body, something Bustamante describes as ‘turtling’—turning into a turtle. Cardio, intense weightlifting, and high-adrenaline workouts activate the fight-or-flight response and can make it more noticeable.

For most people, everything returns to normal within minutes or up to an hour. It can take longer with dehydration, anxiety, caffeine or pre-workout, cold, or a very demanding session. Bustamante emphasizes that there is no physical harm and that flaccid size varies enormously from one man to another. What concerns him most is embarrassment, avoiding locker rooms, or comparing oneself to others.

What should prompt a visit to a professional: persistent changes in size, new erectile dysfunction, pain, curvature, numbness, or urinary symptoms.
