Lamine Yamal put a huge figure on the difference that, according to him, exists between his poor performances and those of other footballers. In a reflection for The Guardian, he said: “One bad game of mine is equivalent to 400 bad games by anyone else. I have a 9/10 game and people will say it was a 7”.
In that comparison, the player contrasts two ways of measuring his performances: a game he considers a nine out of ten can, in people’s eyes, be a seven; a poor performance of his, by contrast, he equates with hundreds of other people’s poor games. His comment focuses on the yardstick by which, in his own view, each of his performances is judged.
