One day Robin Williams made Koko, a gorilla mourning the death of her baby, laugh

Koko had gone six months without laughing. The world’s most famous gorilla, capable of communicating with more than 1,000 signs, had lost her baby and since then had lived sunk in a silence her caretakers did not know how to break.

In 2001, Robin Williams arrived at the sanctuary in California where Koko lived and spent time with her without scripts or cameras hovering over them: just gestures, tickles, and that overflowing empathy that made him unique. Within minutes, the gorilla began to laugh. Her researchers said it was the first time in months they had seen her like that. Williams also came away transformed: he confessed it was one of the most meaningful encounters of his life. 🥹

But the moment that was etched forever came at the end. Koko took the actor’s hand and placed it on her own head. In gorilla language, that gesture means: “do it again”. Two beings from different worlds, united by something that needs no translation. 🦍❤️
