At 18, Katie Stubblefield made a decision that would change her life forever: she attempted to end her life using a shotgun.
The consequence was such a devastating facial injury that doctors had to perform more than a dozen surgeries over the following years in an attempt to reconstruct her face.
But the injuries were too severe. Finally, specialists at Cleveland Clinic reached an extraordinary conclusion: she needed a face transplant.
Katie was 21 when she became the youngest person in the United States to undergo this type of procedure. The operation lasted approximately 31 hours and was far more complex than usual: surgeons transplanted skin, muscles, nerves, jaw bones, a nose, eyelids, and other facial structures.
The change was enormous. Before the transplant, Katie had lost much of the normal function of her face and faced difficulties speaking, eating, and interacting with other people. Afterwards, she began a lengthy rehabilitation process to regain those abilities.
