An English player thought it would be funny. During the match between England and Argentina, he imitated Enzo Fernández’s celebration after scoring against the English themselves, that gesture everyone now reads as “Go to bed and sleep”.
Except in Argentina, jokes are returned with interest. Several Argentine players did not take it well at all, and the whole thing ended in a round of punches right on the field.
The commentators held nothing back: “it’s one thing to celebrate toward the stands and quite another to do it in the players’ faces”. It seems the handbook on proper celebrations is only written by them… until it gets returned to them.
On social media, they brought out the phrase: “it seems they like to give but not receive”.
