Otter was born without part of his skull fully formed, leaving his brain dangerously exposed to any blow.
He was rescued in Northern California along with his sister Bunny, both malnourished and sick. Baby Kitten Rescue, the Los Angeles shelter run by Caroline Grace, took him in and made him a custom little black helmet so he could move around without risking his life. He lived like that for months, playing and growing with that protection on all day.
When Otter finished developing, the MASH veterinary hospital fitted him with a titanium mesh that permanently sealed the opening in his skull. A month and a half later, in January 2023, he no longer needed the helmet. Today he lives without restrictions, adopted together with Bunny, enjoying something that had seemed impossible: a normal life.
