Victoria Granatto didn’t ask permission to say it 🦁

At 35, the Las Leonas forward has just become a world hockey champion with Argentina, and in an interview with ESPN Hockey she downplayed something half the country regarded as sacred: Lionel Messi’s greeting. She said it bothered her that her own teammates were waiting for that message as if it validated their achievement, and delivered the phrase that changed everything: “Our history is bigger”. For her, the true idols are Luciana Aymar and Mercedes Margalot, not a football captain sending greetings on social media.

The phrase spread like wildfire and divided Argentina between those who accused her of being ungrateful and those who applauded a world champion for standing up for her own legacy without seeking anyone’s approval. Granatto had to clarify that she admires Messi, but by then it was too late: social media exploded to such an extent that she was forced to make her Instagram account private to avoid more insults.
