Stacey Warnecke was 30 years old and was on the floor of her home, out of breath, when she asked Emily Lal not to leave her alone.

Lal had no medical training. Warnecke had paid her 6.000 dollars to accompany her through her birth without a hospital, doctors, or anything. When Warnecke said “I’m bleeding”, Lal looked between her legs, saw no blood, and assured her that she was fine. In reality, the bleeding was internal. They did not call an ambulance until half an hour later, and only because Warnecke authorized it for the third time.

She died on September 29, 2025, in a hospital in Melbourne, Australia, after exhausting the medical center’s blood supplies while trying to save her. The experts who testified in court were unanimous. Her death could have been prevented. Now a court is investigating why more and more women are choosing births without any medical assistance, and what led Stacey to entrust her life and her daughter’s to someone without any qualifications.
