Paolo Maldini has already made his position clear in the debate over the candidates for the next Ballon d’Or.
For him, the award should recognize the best player of the year, not automatically reward the footballer who won the most important trophies without becoming the hero.
“I will always give it to Leo Messi, who is consistently the best player in the world”, the Italian said, concluding his argument.
That is the nuance in his position: the most important titles can be part of the discussion, but on their own they are not enough to identify the winner.
Maldini focuses on who was the best player of the year, and his answer leaves no suspense: Leo Messi.
