51-year-old Paul Nixon lived in Harris County, Texas, as if nothing had happened.
But by February 2019, he had already filed for divorce from his wife, with a waiver of service signed by a notary who never existed. In April, a judge signed the order. Nixon was legally single, and she had no idea.
It all came to light in May, when she confronted him about some suspicious jewelry expenses. That’s when Nixon confessed: they were already divorced. Authorities vacated the decree after discovering the fraud, and in September they formally charged him with aggravated perjury, a crime that could cost him up to 10 years in prison. He turned himself in at the Harris County courthouse.
