Before taking the shot, he told his dad: “He’ll save it for sure, as always” 🥅💛 Tegueste, Tenerife, 2002. That is where Pedri was born, into a family where football was left unfinished.
His father, Fernando González, was a goalkeeper for local teams and dreamed of making the big leap, until the death of his own father and the family’s financial circumstances forced him to hang up his gloves and devote himself to the family business. That dream did not die: it transformed.
Every time Pedri wins something important, he returns to that imaginary pitch. League, Copa del Rey, Super Cup, Euro 2024… and now the 2026 World Cup, after the 1-0 win over Argentina.
Before taking the penalty, he told his father “He’ll save it for sure, as always”, and chipped it, Panenka style. Fernando saved it, once again.
No trophy compares to that moment. At 23 years old and with the world at his feet, Pedri chooses to give his father back, if only for a few seconds, the goal that life took away from him, as a tradition that never fails.
