“People break up. Families fall apart. People make decisions. I don’t care one way or the other”. —Anthony Hopkins on his relationship with his daughter Abigail

And years later, he regretted what he said.

Anthony Hopkins acknowledged that speaking so coldly about his daughter Abigail was something he regretted, and admitted that, despite everything, the estrangement had broken his heart.

Their relationship had been complicated for decades. Hopkins separated from Abigail’s mother when she was very young, and over the years, alcohol, distance, and disagreements further weakened their bond.

In the 90s, they tried to grow closer and even worked together, but the reconciliation didn’t last. Years later, they were once again practically out of contact.

In 2018, when asked about her, Hopkins replied: “People break up. Families fall apart. People make decisions. I don’t care one way or the other”.

Over time, his tone changed completely. In his memoirs, he acknowledged that the situation hurt him, that he understood Abigail might not forgive him, and that his door would always remain open to her.

He also said that his wife had tried to invite her to visit them but never got a response. Abigail, however, has maintained that she too made attempts to reconnect at various times.

Hopkins eventually regretted the harshness of his words, but so far, that hasn’t been enough to rebuild his relationship with his only daughter.
