“People wonder if love for a child comes from DNA. I knew it didn’t. They’re yours, and you love them from the moment they’re placed in your arms”—Katherine Heigl on her adopted daughters

Before becoming a mom, Katherine Heigl had already seen in her own home that a family could be built without sharing a drop of blood ❤️

The actress grew up alongside her sister Margaret, who was adopted from South Korea, and that experience made adoption a natural part of the idea of family she imagined for her future. So when she started a family with Josh Kelley, she knew she wanted to follow that path.

They adopted Naleigh in 2009; she was also born in South Korea, and Adalaide joined the family in 2012. Years later, Katherine also experienced pregnancy and gave birth to her son Joshua, but she said that it didn’t change how she felt about her daughters.

For her, the difference was in the process, not the bond. She even said that when you hold a child for the first time, love appears immediately, along with the urge to protect them from everything.

Katherine had been clear about it long before becoming a mother: she wanted to build a family like the one she herself had grown up in. And she never needed everyone to share the same DNA to call it a family ❤️
