“I’m one of the survivors, one of the few and the proud. We’re like the Marines.”

Pete Davidson said it jokingly, but there was a lot more behind the joke. In a cover interview for Variety, the 32-year-old comedian spoke for the first time so candidly about his nine months with Kim Kardashian, four years after their breakup. He was referring to her dating history, which includes Kanye West and Kris Humphries, and how difficult it is to maintain a relationship under that level of scrutiny.

He spoke without bitterness—quite the opposite. He said he cares about her a lot, that she was very respectful, and that she never made him do anything he didn’t want to. The problem was him. With the fans, the security, and that feeling of always looking over his shoulder, that world was too much for someone struggling with his mental health and drug use.

Today Pete is sober, is the father of Scottie, a little girl who’s almost a year old, and says he regrets nothing: he knew what he was getting into. The two met on the set of SNL in 2021, kissed in a sketch of Aladdin, and broke up in August 2022. He even got “Jasmine and Aladdin” tattooed on his collarbone to remember it.
