The pole was the only thing keeping her on her feet.
With the water rising centimeter by centimeter, the little dog was left tied there, unable to move, while Hurricane Harvey battered Texas in August 2017. All around her there was nothing but rushing water, drifting branches, and the sound of relentless rain. She did not move. She only stared to one side, as if waiting to recognize some shape amid the storm.

Then a man in a raincoat and boots appeared, walking against the current to reach the pole. He did not hesitate to step into the water or stand watching from a distance: he moved forward step by step until he was standing in front of her and stretched out his hand.
The photos of that moment, taken by photojournalists covering the disaster, showed something the hurricane could not erase: that amid the destruction, someone decided not to leave a trapped little dog alone.
