Chinese athlete Wu Yanni has become one of the most talked-about figures in athletics in her country, though not only because of her performances on the track.

Despite having set the Chinese national record in the indoor 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.01 seconds in 2025, her public image has sparked intense debate among fans and social media users.

According to the YouTube channel @urchineseunc, the hurdler usually competes wearing striking makeup, shows tattoos, maintains an active presence on Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok), and often makes gestures that some interpret as a display of confidence, such as walking toward the track with a runway-like attitude or calling herself “Angel of Combat”, in reference to a popular manga.

For part of the Chinese public, these attitudes contrast with the traditional image of the country’s historic athletes, known for keeping a low profile and focusing almost exclusively on sporting results and national prestige.

Her supporters, on the other hand, argue that Wu represents a new generation of athletes unafraid to express their personality outside competition and that her appearance should not diminish the value of her sporting achievements.

The discussion has turned the runner into one of China’s most polarizing athletes: while some celebrate her authenticity and style, others believe she should prioritize medals and titles over building a personal brand.
