“I slept with my half-brother”. Victoria Hill was 35 when, in 2020, she took a commercial DNA test out of curiosity about her health history. The results began to reveal something she had never imagined: she had dozens of half-siblings she did not know about, and her biological father was not the man who had raised her.

The genetic connection led to Burton Caldwell, a Connecticut fertility doctor who had treated her mother during the 1980s. Maralee Hill believed Caldwell would use sperm from an anonymous donor, but later genetic tests indicated that the doctor himself was Victoria’s biological father, as well as the father of numerous children conceived through his treatments.

Then an even more disturbing match appeared. One of the half-siblings Victoria discovered was her former high school boyfriend. They had been in a relationship during their teenage years, in the early 2000s, with no idea that they shared a father. When he took a DNA test, he got the results and sent Victoria a screenshot: “You’re my sister”.

The discovery led Victoria to revisit her entire family history. In 2024, she said that at least four of Caldwell’s children she knew about had attended the same high school as she had, and another had gone to the same elementary school. By then, she had identified at least 22 half-siblings; in testimony submitted in 2026, she said the number had risen to 30.

The case began to prompt legal action. In August 2022, another of Caldwell’s biological daughters, Janine Pierson, confronted him at his home after discovering through DNA testing that he was her father. In March 2024, Victoria testified before Connecticut lawmakers and publicly shared that she had been in a relationship with one of her half-siblings without knowing it.

For Victoria, the issue goes far beyond discovering who her father was. The case revealed the consequences fertility fraud can have decades after it occurs: people discovering as adults who their biological relatives are, and who may unknowingly have dated a sibling. “If he could have been my brother, anyone could be”, Victoria said, recalling how it changed the way she looked at strangers.
