Every night, when the sun went down, Víctor Martín Angulo Córdova would take his notebooks and leave his home. He would walk a few meters to a streetlight pole, sit on the sidewalk, and make the most of that single source of light to do his schoolwork.
He was only 12 years old and lived with his mother in a modest home in Moche, Peru, where they had no electricity. While other children studied in their bedrooms, he depended on streetlight to complete his homework. Even so, he never stopped striving. His dream was to become a police officer to help fight corruption and give his family a better future.
A security camera captured the scene in 2019. In the footage, the boy could be seen completely focused, writing in his notebooks beneath the streetlight pole. The video went viral, and millions of people around the world were moved by his determination.
The story reached Bahrain, where businessman and philanthropist Yaqoob Yusuf Ahmed Mubarak decided to travel thousands of kilometers just to meet the boy. What he found was a family struggling every day to get ahead. So he decided to help.
Mubarak funded the complete renovation of the home, made it possible for the family to have electricity, supported improvements at the school Víctor attended, and helped his mother start a small business so she could earn an income.
What began with a boy studying beneath a streetlight pole ended up transforming the life of an entire family.
Víctor’s story went around the world because it reminded people of a truth that often goes unnoticed: there are children who do not need more talent than others to get ahead, but simply the opportunities that many of us take for granted.
Because sometimes, a single light is enough to illuminate the path toward a completely different future.
