Kayleigh Greer, a 35-year-old British mother, had been convinced for almost three years that she had bought a piece of furniture in the wrong colour. In 2016, she had paid £150 for a three-drawer chest from B&Q to use as a TV stand in the bedroom she shares with her husband, Darren.
She wanted a grey model because the room was decorated precisely in shades of grey and silver. However, the blue piece of furniture was the only one available in the shop, so she decided to buy it anyway, although she was never satisfied with the colour.
Throughout that time, Kayleigh and her husband had noticed that there was a kind of white tape on the top of the drawers. She thought it was simply protective material that she was eventually supposed to remove, but she never imagined that the blue colour of the entire chest was also part of that protection.
The revelation came in 2019, while Kayleigh was giving the bedroom a deep clean. As she vacuumed near the piece of furniture, she finally decided to remove the white tape. When she began to pull it, she discovered that the blue surface was coming off too.
At first, she panicked because she thought she was ruining the furniture. But she continued removing the layer, and underneath appeared something she had been looking for years: the furniture was grey.
“I thought I had ruined it, but I kept peeling it off and it just kept coming away. Underneath was a really lovely grey”, she said.
The surprise was even greater because Kayleigh had never suspected that the blue was a protective film. As she explained, even the piece of furniture on display in the shop had had the same blue appearance when she bought it.
After completely removing the film, the chest finally matched the bedroom. “It’s as if we’ve received a completely new piece of furniture and haven’t spent a penny”, she said.
When Kayleigh went downstairs to show Darren all the blue film she had removed, he burst out laughing and immediately went upstairs to see what had happened. For the couple, what had been a purchase they were not entirely convinced about for almost three years ended up becoming an unexpected “new piece of furniture”.
