Hundreds of years from now, someone might find a strange statue on the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea and wonder what ancient civilization worshipped such a creature.

And that is exactly the point.

The American artist known as Sunday Nobody spent around 25.000 dollars to make a huge bronze statue combining the body of the Discobolus, one of the most famous sculptures of ancient Greece, with the face of “Handsome Squidward”, the unforgettable muscular version of the character from SpongeBob SquarePants.

The piece was made in China and weighs more than 200 kilos.

But Sunday didn’t want to display it in a museum.

He traveled to Greece and, with the help of a small team, transported the gigantic sculpture on rafts out to sea. There, they cut the ropes and watched as Squidward descended until he stood about 9 meters below the surface. Its exact location remains a secret.

The reason?

“To confuse future archaeologists”.

The prank was taken surprisingly seriously. Sunday even consulted an archaeologist to find out what material could withstand centuries underwater without causing a significant environmental impact. The answer was bronze.

The result is a kind of absurd time capsule: an internet meme turned into a supposed archaeological relic.

Perhaps researchers of the future will immediately discover that it belongs to the 21st century.

Or perhaps they’ll spend weeks trying to figure out why an ancient civilization decided to immortalize a muscular man with the face of a squid.
