A photograph of a lion with a perfectly curly mane is making its way around the world. At first glance, it looks like an image created with artificial intelligence or digitally retouched, but the story is completely real.

The protagonist is Nzuri-M6, a young lion from the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The image was captured by wildlife pilot and photographer Kambiz Cameo Pourghanad, known on Instagram as silent_whispers.photography, who said that Nzuri is one of the most striking specimens he has seen in Africa.

What makes this feline so special is its mane. Instead of the messy appearance usually seen in most male lions, Nzuri sports perfectly defined curls that made thousands of people joke that he looked like he had “just come out of a hair salon”.

Specialists explain that there is no single reason for this curious appearance; the shape of the mane can vary considerably from one lion to another due to genetics, but environmental factors such as humidity, rain, and the way the hair dries after getting wet also play a role. The combination of these elements can produce a very unusual wavy effect, like Nzuri’s.

In addition to its appearance, the mane serves very important functions: it helps protect the neck during fights between males, intimidates rivals, and also influences mate selection, as females tend to prefer fuller, darker manes, associated with strong and healthy animals.

The photograph went viral within hours and turned Nzuri into the so-called “King of Curls”, proving that, sometimes, nature can create images far more surprising than any filter or artificial intelligence.
