Poppy has cancer and a routine that keeps her going: sitting beside her community stone garden, wearing her harness while her mom watches closely, waiting for someone to stop and say hello.
Her owner put all of this together with only her in mind—painted stones donated from Germany, Maui, Kansas, and many other places, each one meant for a stranger to sit for a minute, scratch her head, and take one home. But in her own neighborhood, hardly anyone comes near. Some assumed Poppy wasn’t friendly just because of her serious face, and that misunderstanding broke both their hearts.
That’s why there’s now a sign clarifying what people need to know: when Poppy is at her post, she can be petted. No one is asking this cat to be famous—just for someone to stop and love her for a little while, because neither of them knows when breast cancer might bring an end to that sweet routine.
