Lines of people waiting outside a club in Portland. Not to dance, not to drink: to donate a new toy in exchange for a topless photo, taken with consent and in a controlled environment.

It’s called “Tatas for Toys” and it began almost as a joke among the city’s exotic dancers. This year it surpassed all its previous records, mobilizing hundreds of volunteers and donors who would never have walked through the door of a traditional holiday campaign. Each participant sets their own limits, and every toy ends up in the hands of real families connected with Portland’s children’s hospital.

What started as a whim ended up becoming one of the season’s most effective causes. Sometimes generosity finds paths no one could have imagined.
