Prichard Colón was 23 years old when he stepped into the ring for what would be his last fight.
It was October 2015, in Virginia, and his opponent Terrel Williams struck him again and again in the back of the head, those illegal blows that the rules prohibit because they can kill. Referee Joe Cooper saw the blows and stopped nothing.
Prichard ended up with a subdural hematoma, 221 days in a coma, and a brain damaged forever. He had a 16-1 record, was Puerto Rico’s great prospect, and won a Pan American gold medal at 17. All of that was left behind a wheelchair. For eleven years, his parents, Richard and Nieves, cared for him in Florida while boxing barely reacted: a rule bearing his name in 2016, an honorary title in 2021. Terrel Williams never faced any real sanction.
This Thursday, August 13, 2026, Prichard died at 33. His father confirmed it on Facebook. The family did not state the exact cause, only that the fight never quite finished killing him until now.
