Marci couldn’t have anyone close by. Radiation treatment for her thyroid cancer required her to remain in strict isolation at her home in California, with no hugs, no visitors, no one on the other side of the door.
Jon refused to accept that distance. He carried a desk into the hallway, set it up right against the bedroom door, and stayed there, day after day, working inches from his wife even though he couldn’t touch her. It was April 2017, and the person who saw him was his daughter Mackenna, then a teenager, who photographed the scene and uploaded it to Twitter without imagining that more than 7.000 people would share it.
Marci later told the story behind what that image didn’t show: Jon accompanies her to every medical appointment, every test, every radiation session, and when he can’t be inside, he stays as close as the rules allow. No cancer treatment includes a list of instructions for love, but Jon found his with a desk and a chair.
