12 years ago, Brynn Fussell welcomed a new member into the family, a golden retriever puppy who had no trouble stealing everyone’s heart. For more than a decade, the American dog had one mission every morning: rain or shine, he went out before breakfast, searched for the newspaper in the yard, and carried it in his mouth to his family’s door.
“He gets very happy and very proud”, Fussell said.
Until one piece of news devastated them.
As he entered his senior years, Mason began experiencing difficulties, and various tests revealed glaucoma that soon robbed him of his sight. The veterinarians had to remove both of his eyes, and his owner, Brynn Fussell, thought that this routine, like his joy, would come to an end forever.
But she was wrong. As soon as he recovered from surgery, Mason went down to the yard as if nothing had happened. Using only his sense of smell and the memory of years spent walking the same route, he tracked across the grass to the exact spot where the newspaper always landed, took it between his teeth, and returned home with the same joy he had as a puppy. Along the way, he even crosses paths some mornings with Casey, the family cat.
Brynn does not stop him from continuing: she knows that, for Mason, carrying out that task is more important than seeing. Now the golden brings joy to everyone with his photos and videos on the internet, which inspire not only other dogs, but entire families as well.
