The puppy did not move.
It had been standing on the edge of a high ledge for minutes, on the roof of a store in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, without daring to take another step. Below, the drop was too far for such a small animal. Then a woman passed by, saw the scene, and did not hesitate: she opened a large umbrella, turned it upside down, and held it directly beneath the animal, as if it were an improvised net.
The puppy looked down, calculated, and jumped. It landed exactly in the center of the fabric, safe and sound. Everything was recorded, and the video reached thousands of screens, even being shared by the Chinese state agency Xinhua as a memorable rescue. No one knows the woman’s name or the puppy’s, but that instinct to help a stranger in danger needed no introductions.
