“He couldn’t go on.” That was what the doctors understood when the final tests confirmed that the damage to Quino’s kidneys was irreversible.
Quino was a golden Labrador, one of the rescue dogs of the Spanish NGO IAE, honored for his work after the earthquakes that struck Turkey and that also took him on international emergency missions. He returned from those missions with a rare illness that gradually shut down his kidneys. His handler, Pancho, never left his side for a single day: he slept near him, managed every treatment, and supported every attempt at recovery.
Quino held on for as long as his body allowed. Thousands of people followed his case and donated to cover the veterinary expenses, and that same community managed to pay off the debt before saying goodbye to him. Today, the entire IAE family stands by Pancho, and the whole country thanks a dog who gave everything to find those no one else could find.
