Morticia and Gomez’s passionate tango in Addams Family Values (1993) is one of the film’s most memorable scenes. But behind that dance was a story few people knew.

During filming, Raúl Juliá, the beloved Puerto Rican actor who played Gomez, was dealing with serious health problems that he kept private. The actor had stomach cancer and died in October 1994, just a year after the film’s release.

Despite being ill, Juliá continued working with a dedication that Anjelica Huston, his co-star, would recall years later. The actress said he never missed a day of filming and that the two of them took tango lessons, without him ever complaining.

In the documentary Raúl Juliá: The World’s a Stage, Huston also recalled that the actor was very ill, although at the time he did not openly share it with his colleagues.

Today, more than three decades later, that dance remains one of the couple’s most iconic scenes. It’s a testament to the talent and dedication of an actor who left an indelible mark on cinema.
