Razia was 9 years old and alone with her baby sister in the family shelter, next to the field, in rural Uganda. Their parents were working nearby.

The shelter caught fire. According to ReSurge International, no one knows how the fire started. Razia managed to get out, but when she realized her sister was still inside, she didn’t stay outside: she went back in to save her.

The baby suffered catastrophic burns and did not survive. Razia got out with burns covering 60% of her body. Volunteers Katie Osborn and Dr. David Kulber acted quickly to get her care, and the girl was transferred to Kiruddu National Referral Hospital, Uganda’s only national burn center.

Today, Razia is back home, surrounded by her family and sharing pineapples with the siblings she had missed most.
