Joseph Tillman heard he would spend 20 years in prison, and then something happened that no one in that courtroom expected.

Tillman, 50, had run over Chuck Johnson, 78, in 2024 as he rode his electric bicycle on the roadway. According to the investigation cited in the report, he was driving under the influence of nitrous oxide and fled without helping the victim. He pleaded guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide, as well as hit-and-run, making a false statement, driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless driving. Before sentencing, he apologized to the family.

After the August 7 hearing, Regina Johnson, the widow, rose from her seat, hugged the man who killed her husband, and whispered in his ear that she forgave him. According to the report, the gesture surprised even the judge.

But not everyone in the family saw it that way: the victim’s daughter rejected her mother’s embrace, expressed her grief, and blamed Tillman for the tragedy.
