Remi didn’t see the hole in time.
The coonhound was roaming freely on a rural property in Harrison County, Indiana, on August 14, when the ground simply disappeared beneath her paws. She fell nearly 15 meters into the total darkness of a cave, the kind of fall that would end in tragedy for any other animal.

Her owner immediately called the cave rescue team from the Indiana Conservation Officers. Caver Chris Schotter descended with an officer to the bottom, while two others assembled a mechanical hoisting system on the surface to pull her out alive. When they finally brought her up, Remi was trembling and frightened, but completely unharmed. “Miraculously, the dog suffered no injuries in the fall”, the authorities themselves acknowledged, still amazed by what they had just witnessed.
