Renée Lariviere was about to leave her building in Sudbury, Canada, to get fast food. A friend threw her the car keys. She reached out to catch them, as she had done hundreds of times before.
But this time something went wrong. She felt a sharp impact to her face and thought she had simply missed the catch. The adrenaline blocked any pain, so she did not even suspect what had really happened until she looked in the mirror: one of the keys was stuck in her cheek. Her first fear was not the pain, but going blind.
At the hospital, she underwent a CT scan and an emergency plastic surgeon was called. The specialist confirmed something that surprised everyone: the key had made its way in and become lodged inside her nasal cavities. She underwent surgery, received stitches, and today Renée has fully recovered, with no lasting effects or visible scars.
