Richard Klinkhamer wrote crime novels in a Dutch village called Hongerige Wolf. In 1991, his wife, Hannelore “Hanny” Godfrinon, disappeared without a trace. The police suspected him from the first day, but neither exhaustive searches of the property nor an F-16 aircraft with infrared cameras found anything.
A year after the incident, Klinkhamer submitted a disturbing manuscript to a publisher: it described seven different methods for killing a wife, one of them involving a meat grinder. They rejected it as too horrifying to publish. He moved to Amsterdam, became a recognized literary figure, and enjoyed asking journalists whether his story had any truth to it.
Nine years passed before new owners renovated the house and found human bones beneath the concrete floor of a shed in the garden. Klinkhamer confessed to having struck her with a crowbar during an argument. In 2001, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for manslaughter. He was released in 2003, before serving half of his sentence.
