All officers and new recruits of the Richmond Police Department, in Virginia, United States, must complete a mandatory LGBTQ+ awareness course as part of their official training.

The training, led by Captain Kim Mooney, the institution’s LGBTQ+ community liaison, seeks to strengthen inclusion, improve the relationship with the community, and prepare officers to properly investigate and respond to hate crimes.

At the end of May 2026, the 132nd basic recruit class completed this training, which is part of the academy’s standard curriculum. The measure corresponds to an internal department policy and not to a state requirement in Virginia.
