From mortgage advisor to stopping Spain at the World Cup thanks to a LinkedIn message: the incredible story of Roberto Lopes

Roberto “Pico” Lopes looked over that message, didn’t understand a word, and let it go. It was in Portuguese, arrived via LinkedIn, and came from someone who wanted to change everything. 🌍

At the time, Lopes was a mortgage advisor at a bank in Dublin. He played football semi-professionally, without big contracts or the spotlight on him. The message was from Cape Verde coach Rui Águas, inviting him to represent his father’s country. But because he didn’t speak the language, he mistook it for spam and archived it. Nine months later, the coach insisted — this time in English — and Lopes finally replied. ⚽

That one really did change everything. He made his debut for Cape Verde in 2019 and was a key figure in the historic 0-0 draw against Spain at the archipelago’s first-ever World Cup. The man who processed mortgages in an office ended up stopping the European champions. Sometimes life sends you a second chance disguised as a suspicious email. 🔥
