Wayne Rooney doesn’t want a medal he didn’t win on the pitch.

On his podcast Stick to United, Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer said he wouldn’t feel comfortable accepting another Premier League title if City were stripped of theirs.

“I’d put them in the lowest tier they can be relegated to and then impose restrictions on how much money they can spend over the next three or four seasons”.

His argument is straightforward: in 2011-12, United had a six- or seven-point lead with four or five games to play, and squandered it.

The title was decided by Agüero’s last-minute goal on the final matchday, with Mancini’s City finishing ahead of United on goal difference.

Rooney also spoke from the opposing dressing room’s perspective: he said he puts himself in the City players’ shoes, as they gave everything on the pitch and believed they had won the league.

If they knew nothing about what was going on in the boardroom, he would be devastated if their medals were taken away. He also believes too many years have passed to reassign titles.
