Russian surgeons removed a tumor so large from the back of an elderly man’s neck that doctors called it his ‘second head’

An elderly man arrived at a hospital in Russia’s Sverdlovsk region with a mass on the back of his neck that had been growing uncontrollably for years. Its size was such that the doctors themselves described it as a ‘second head’: a solid protrusion that altered the patient’s silhouette and compressed structures in the neck from behind.

The surgical team from the region’s Ministry of Health documented the case and made it public. The post-operative images show the back of the patient’s neck with an extensive scar, the mark of a resection that had to be planned with precision to avoid neurological or vascular damage in an anatomically critical area.

The man was photographed alongside one of the surgeons shortly after the procedure: standing, without the lump. What had distorted his body for years was removed in the operating room. The case was recorded as one of the most technically complex procedures documented by that institution.
