In Ecuador, thousands of girls, boys, and adolescents are waiting for a family. Since August 2026, there have been faster rules for finding one, but a door remains closed to some people who would like to open it.
The new Organic Reform Law establishes that joint adoption is reserved solely for opposite-sex couples. The discussion about who can and cannot adopt is once again being brought to the forefront with greater force.
LGBTIQ+ organizations and groups have already announced that they will challenge parts of the law before the Constitutional Court, and are even considering turning to international bodies. Until that legal battle is resolved, the restriction remains in force. At the heart of it all, the official documents themselves say, there should be a single priority: the best interests of every child waiting for a home.
