Sarah Jessica Parker put it plainly: she doesn’t touch those clothes.

In an interview with PEOPLE at the New York City Ballet Fall Gala, held in New York on October 1, 2026, the actress explained why she never wears the Sex and the City clothes she still owns in her everyday life.

The tutus, the fantastical dresses, and the shoes that made Carrie Bradshaw famous are still there, untouched. Parker said that in many cases, only one piece of each garment exists, or she’s already worn it onscreen. But there’s another reason: for her, there’s a huge divide between Sarah Jessica Parker and Carrie Bradshaw. Wearing those clothes outside of the character would feel as strange as walking down the street in the costume of Sarah Sanderson, her character in Hocus Pocus. It simply doesn’t fit with her life.

But keeping them isn’t the same as forgetting them. It all means a great deal to her, and she’s very sentimental about those clothes. In fact, on rare occasions, she has taken out a piece of the clothing she keeps to wear in her personal life, such as when she attended a birthday party in England in 2025. That said, before doing so, she thinks carefully about where she’ll wear it and whether there’s a risk of damaging it.

She also can’t bring herself to choose a favorite: to her, a simple, inexpensive garment is worth just as much as a designer one.
