Sasha Samsudean was 27 when she returned to her building in downtown Orlando in the early hours of an October morning in 2015.
Two women had helped her get there because she was intoxicated, but she had neither a key nor a phone. Security cameras captured the guard, Stephen Duxbury, interacting with her as she tried to get inside. She eventually managed to enter behind another resident, unaware that it would be her final journey to her apartment door.
The footage later showed Duxbury walking through the halls beside her. Prosecutors argued that he entered her apartment, attacked her, and killed her. Investigators found his fingerprints inside the apartment and his DNA on Sasha’s body. In 2017, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, attempted sexual assault, and burglary. He was sentenced to life in prison. The man hired to protect her ended up being the one who took her life.
