Benny Blanco had no idea that custom existed.
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he said that on the day of his wedding to Selena Gomez in Santa Barbara, the singer’s grandmother approached him with a very clear instruction: save a portion of the cake to eat exactly one year later.
No one explained why at the time, only that it had to be done, as if it were family law.
Blanco, 38, admitted that he kept wondering what kind of tradition it was, but he followed it to the letter. They froze the piece, waited the full 365 days, and, when they reached their first anniversary, they will thaw it and eat it together.
As he explained with a laugh, it’s a symbol of good luck for the marriage, although he hopes it won’t be repeated every year.
