Serena Williams, the American tennis player who in 2014 dominated the WTA world rankings, admitted something that few athletes at her level dare to say out loud.

When she was young, she wanted only one thing: to be tall, strong, muscular. A machine made to win. She never thought about having a typical feminine figure, much less showing it off.

But something changed over the years, and in an interview with Fitness magazine she said it plainly: today she feels proud of her curves and her breasts.

She explained it as a matter of self-esteem, of being convinced that you are beautiful just the way you are. And she proved it by posing in a swimsuit for the magazine’s photo shoot, right when she was the number one in the world.

A message that continues to resonate whenever someone tries to fit into a mold that does not belong to them.
