Teresa is 102 years old. She is sitting beside a hospital bed, somewhere in Colombia, and with her trembling hand she caresses the face of an 82-year-old man.
To anyone who enters that room, the man is elderly. His hair is white, his skin is tired, and a respirator is helping him breathe. But Teresa does not see him that way.
She looks at him, combs his hair back with her fingers, and speaks softly, as if she does not want to wake anyone: “His mother Teresa speaks to him”.
Then comes the word that changes everything. “Sleepyhead”. That is what she called him when he was a child, when he was not yet even five years old and would fall asleep in any corner of the house.
Eight decades later, that same nickname returns to her lips, in the same tone, with the same patience. Her son’s body grew old. The way she calls him did not.
The video lasts just 24 seconds. But it is enough to understand something that almost no one says out loud: one can reach 82 years old, have grandchildren, have an entire life behind them, and still be, to their mother, the same child who learned to walk in front of her.
Teresa was not saying goodbye to an elderly man. She was saying goodbye to her baby.
