In Saltville, Virginia, there is a table where the same thing happens every day.
Colton Keith is 6 years old. His great-grandfather Franklin is 79, and Alzheimer’s took away his ability to care for himself. He cannot cut his food. Many times, he does not even remember the name of the person in front of him.
But every day, without anyone asking him to, Colton sits beside him with a plate of baked potato and coleslaw.
He asks him if he wants some. He cuts each bite with an adult’s patience. He brings it to his mouth with a spoon. And when he is finished, he wipes his lips with a napkin, like someone who has made that gesture a thousand times.
His mother, Nichole Eastridge, was the one who recorded one of those scenes in August 2019. In the video, she asks Colton if he asks his great-grandfather whether the food is good. The boy does. Franklin slowly nods.
There were no cameras the first time Colton helped his great-grandfather eat. Nor the second. That afternoon, all that was recorded was a routine that already existed, one that a child built on his own, bite by bite, long before the world saw it.
Some feats are told with medals. This one is told with a spoon and a napkin.
